Municipal Water

The capital investment forecast over the next decade for municipal water, globally, exceeds US$3 trillion. The challenges to address this mounting need is bifurcated between developed and developing countries.

For the latter, governments, infrastructure investors, and regional development banks are making moves to address basic water and wastewater needs for billions of underserved people. Whereas the former group of developed countries in the U.S. and Europe are confronting the collateral impacts of underinvestment in an aging network of pipes and treatment systems, developing countries continue to work to build out greenfield infrastructure to connect underserved communities. Irrespective of the market, strategic innovative solutions are on the rise to ensure the one thing people cannot live without is reliably available.

Political winds shift regulatory environment and federal funding landscape, investment in infrastructure

The World Economic Forum has determined that interconnected, environment-related risks, such as extreme weather events, climate change, and water crises rank among the leading global risks. Given that the global population is on track to surpass nine billion inhabitants by 2050– a 50% increase from 2010– calls for widespread water infrastructure investment are on the rise. At the forefront are utilities that are driving usage efficiencies and resiliency through wastewater reuse, advanced treatment, alternative financing, and digital solutions. >>Learn More

Utilities face growing list of challenges

Contaminants of emerging concern, as they become more understood and regulated, will necessitate greater investment in monitoring systems, in advanced treatment systems, and in the case of lead, in investments in replacing older pipe infrastructure.

While PFAS received the majority of the attention in 2020, lead has leapfrogged to top priority in 2021 first with the Biden Administration’s second look at the pending updates to the Lead and Copper Rule, and more importantly with the announcement of the American Jobs Plan, which includes US$45 billion for lead service line replacement.>>Learn More

Enhanced asset management on the agenda for utilities and vendors

Across 31 developed countries in Europe, North America, and Asia-Pacific regions, more than US$2.9 trillion of utility assets– water, wastewater, and stormwater– are under management. Within this context, utilities are increasingly turning to advanced asset management solutions to gain efficiencies in operational and capital expenditures. While the concept of asset management has evolved over time, new, more advanced solutions are impacting how utilities plan, design, operate, and maintain critical infrastructure. >>Learn More
