On 6 May 2025, Unitil Corporation announced an agreement to purchase the New Hampshire and the Massachusetts Aquarion Water Company (AWC) operations from the Aquarion Water Authority (AWA) for US$100 million. Under the terms of this deal, Unitil will gain 23,000 new customers and assume responsibility for 331 miles of water distribution mains.
The AWA, a newly created, quasi-public corporation in Connecticut, will continue to provide certain centralized services—such as administrative functions, customer support, and operational assistance—under a five-year operating agreement as part of the transaction. The acquisition is contingent upon the closure of Eversource Energy’s pending US$2.4 billion divestment of AWC, the largest investor-owned utility (IOU) in New England, to the AWA. In 2024, Aquarion’s New Hampshire and Massachusetts assets reported a combined rate base of US$78 million.
