On 27 August 2025, Essential Utilities announced a US$26 million investment in a planned 1,400-acre data center campus in Greene County, Pennsylvania. In partnership with energy developer International Electric Power III, Essential will design, build, and operate an 18 million-gallons-per-day water treatment plant to support the facility’s power generation and data center cooling operations. Through its Peoples Natural Gas business unit, the utility will also provide natural gas consulting and energy management services to the site’s 944-megawatt combined cycle plant.
Essential Utilities, headquartered in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, is the second-largest investor-owned water utility in the U.S., following American Water. Its Aqua America subsidiary serves over 1.1 million water and wastewater connections across nine U.S. states, while Peoples Natural Gas supplies natural gas to 740,300 connections in two states.
