Water, M&A Reshuffle Consolidating EPC Sector

18 April 2016
Research Note

Alberta-based Stantec has moved to acquire Colorado-based MWH Global for US $795 million — representing Stantec’s largest acquisition to date. This latest deal propels Stantec into the top ten rankings of EPC design firms active in the water sector.

The Stantec-MWH deal reinforces a wave of consolidation among leading players looking to reduce exposures to flagging energy and mining sector positions. As EPC firms look to diversify, Stantec is expected to find value in MWH’s Innovyze solution, including higher margins and a spearhead into the burgeoning smart-water sector.

Takeaways

Water, M&A Reshuffle Consolidating EPC Sector:

  • EPC firms see wave of consolidation
  • M&A, water tapped for quick diversification
  • Stantec gains access to unique smart-water position
