Melbourne water market analysis from Bluefield

Water supplies in Melbourne have declined annually since 2012, while water consumption levels have increased. To boost supply, water authorities plan to procure 50 gigalitres from the Victorian Desalination Plant. The project is a public-private partnership between the Victoria Government and a consortium of private companies to finance, design, construct, operate and maintain the plant.

Takeaways

  • Melbourne cashes in on desalination to stem water supply risks.
  • Supply agreement begins to reshape desalination’s perceived value
  • Australia’s utility CAPEX continues slide in favor of operating efficiencies.
