On 2 February 2026, the Barcelona Metropolitan Area authority published a €1.1 billion concession contract for drinking water supply services across eight municipalities serving 230,000 people. The contract comprises €937.4 million for the base 25-year term, plus €140.6 million for an optional 3.75-year extension. It represents the largest municipal water concession contract tendered in Catalonia since Aigües Ter Llobregat in 2012.
The contract scope covers the full drinking water supply chain—from treatment plants through the distribution network to end-user connections. Currently operated by Veolia subsidiary SOREA, these assets supply an average of 12.66 million cubic meters annually at 73% hydraulic efficiency.
