On 19 October 2020, Ontario, Canada-based Algonquin Power and Utilities Corp. completed an agreement to purchase a 93.96% stake (up from the original 53.51% on 11 September 2020) in Chilean water utility Empresa de Servicios Sanitarios de Los Lagos S.A. (ESSAL) from Aguas Andinas. The deal comes amidst political uncertainty partly shaped by an upcoming referendum on Chile’s constitution.
