On 28 August 2026, Algonquin Power & Utilities Corporation, the parent company of Liberty Utilities (Liberty), announced the sale of its 64% ownership stake in the Chilean water utility, Suralis. The buyer is an investment fund managed by Toesca, which already held a 30% stake in Suralis.
Algonquin purchased a 93.96% stake in Suralis, then known as Empresa de Servicios Sanitarios de Los Lagos, for US$162.1 million in October 2020. Two months later, the company sold a 30% share to Toesca. This deal marks Algonquin’s first and only expansion into a water market outside the U.S. Through Liberty, its regulated services division, Algonquin owns and operates electric, natural gas, water, and wastewater utilities. Suralis serves over 250,000 connections, constituting approximately 43% of Liberty’s water customer base and about 18% of its water rate base.
