On 30 January 2026, Badger Meter secured its largest metering contract to date to deploy 1.6 million cellular-enabled water meters to the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority over the next five years.

The contract supports Badger’s blueprint for growth, starting with Badger’s metering stack of E-Series ultrasonic meters and ORION advanced metering infrastructure for real-time insights and analytics, and expanding to its BlueEdge suite of water management solutions and BEACON Software-as-a-Service analytics platform.

This is part of the US$711 million awarded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency in April 2024 in response to Hurricane María, within the Build America Buy America framework. Meter production is set to begin later this year at Badger’s Racine facility. The Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority deployment also reflects the extended gestation cycle of large advanced metering infrastructure projects.

The award underscores an emerging industry shift, with cellular advanced metering infrastructure slowly gaining ground over radiofrequency communication protocols in new deployments and replacements. Vendors that have invested in this architecture early or offer different connectivity capabilities stand to gain market competitiveness.
