On 13 January 2016 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced results from the 2012 Clean Watersheds Needs Survey (CWNS), finding that US$271 billion is required over five years to maintain and improve the wastewater infrastructure in the U.S. The previous survey suggested that the U.S. would require US$338.1 billion from 2008 to 2013.

States participating suggested that a shorter planning horizon and tight municipal budgets have decreased the number of wastewater projects in planning, driving down anticipated investment but not reducing needs.  In this Research Note, Bluefield water experts analyze the implications behind this change and impact on infrastructure investment.
