On 5 September 2025, MPWiK Warszawa, MPWiK Wrocław, Aquanet Poznań, and the Kraków City Waterworks launched the “ISAC Wod-Kan” project, a knowledge and information platform designed to strengthen the cybersecurity of Polish water systems.
This collaboration was announced after suffering a sophisticated cyberattack on 13 August, targeting the water and sewage network of a major city. Polish authorities reportedly intercepted the attack, preventing a potential interruption in the water supply. Recently, several water facilities, including the water treatment plants in Szczytno, Sierakowo, and Witków, as well as the wastewater treatment plant in Kuźnica, have also been targeted.
The Polish government has disclosed that Russia has intensified its cyberattacks, averaging 300 attempts per day in 2025 and targeting various sectors, including the water sector. Hacker groups linked to Russia, such as the Cyber Army of Russia Reborn, have claimed responsibility for the attacks on Polish wastewater treatment plants. In response to this escalating danger, Poland established Europe’s first joint civilian-military cybersecurity operations center to coordinate defense efforts.
