On 9 September, France published Decree No. 2025-958, outlining its strategy to reduce industrial discharges of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. This decree underscores Law No. 2025-188, adopted in February. It sets targets to achieve a 70% reduction in PFAS discharges by February 2028, with the goal of complete elimination by 2030.
The regulations apply to all substances classified as PFAS by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, covering over 4,700 compounds. The decree could affect approximately 3,600 industrial sites across five main types of facilities: chemical manufacturers, textile and leather processing plants, metal plating operations, paper and cardboard producers, and waste management. These industries use PFAS for their unique properties, including resistance to water, grease, and heat. Since 2023, more than 3,000 of these facilities have conducted preliminary PFAS testing campaigns.
