On 15 July 2025, CoreWeave announced a US$6.0 billion investment in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, to construct a new AI-optimized data center with a capacity of up to 300 megawatts. This move is part of a global expansion strategy that also includes sites in Spain. The NVIDIA-backed company supports leading artificial intelligence developers, such as Mistral, IBM, and Cohere. Recently, it signed an agreement with OpenAI valued at up to US$11.9 billion, further reinforcing its position in the competitive landscape of AI infrastructure.
To secure capacity and reduce costs, CoreWeave announced on 7 July 2025 its intention to acquire Core Scientific. This deal aims to eliminate US$10 billion in future lease commitments while unlocking access to existing high-density assets. These companies are transitioning toward liquid cooling solutions, such as direct-to-chip systems, to manage escalating thermal loads. The shift signals a departure from more water-intensive evaporative cooling methods. The transition not only alters the cooling equation but also positions water efficiency as a crucial factor in the economies and risk profiles of data centers and the development of AI infrastructure.
