Gullivar Shepard is a Partner at Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates (MVVA), a landscape architecture firm. He joins us to illustrate how landscape architecture can break down silos among urban development stakeholders, such as municipal agencies, developers, and NGOs, advance nature-based solutions like green infrastructure for stormwater management, and foster water stewardship in cities. Plus, Reese Tisdale of Bluefield Research joins us for another Bluefield on Tap segment on trends in the U.S. water M&A market.
In this session, you’ll learn about:
- Gullivar’s background in architecture and city-building and how he came to landscape architecture and the water sector
- How water resources were historically an afterthought in urban planning
- How the ability of water to “make things go away” has seeped into our culture of how we view and think about water
- How a project at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens saved millions of gallons of potable water and created a smart pond to assist with stormwater runoff
- The Toronto flood protection project that reclaimed what was once North America’s largest marshlands, creating new marshlands, fish habitat and much more in addition to solving the flooding problem
- Why landscape architecture is the link that de-silos a multitude of government agencies, NGOs and private parties to foster development
- The complicated fundraising process to achieve a successful development project
- The benefits of nature-based systems vis-à-vis engineered systems
- The differences in landscape architecture projects in arid versus water rich climates
- Gullivar’s fantastic leave-behind message
