The U.S. industrial water market is undergoing significant changes, and facility-level data is revealing shifts in demand. Bluefield Research tracks 341,529 industrial facilities across 18 industry verticals and all 50 states, identifying growth opportunities that extend beyond the traditional sectors that have historically defined industrial water demand.

Data processing and hosting is the standout market, increasing at a compound annual growth rate of 12.5%—roughly four times the industry average. Unlike most industrial sectors, data centers consume a much larger share of the water they withdraw, creating a growing need for water reuse, recycling, and efficiency solutions.

Pharmaceutical and beverage manufacturing have also expanded rapidly in recent years, driven by post-COVID-19-pandemic capital investments, the production of GLP-1 drugs, and sustainability initiatives aimed at consumers, all of which are fueling new capacity.

In contrast, fabricated metals and food manufacturing—the two largest industrial sectors in terms of facility count—are growing at or below the industry average. Their scale points to opportunities centered around retrofitting, process optimization, and infrastructure upgrades rather than greenfield development.

Geographic concentration, water usage patterns, and regulatory compliance trends further emphasize these developments. Together, they highlight where industrial water investments are accelerating, how demand is evolving, and where legacy markets are making way for new opportunities.
