Assessing Market Adoption Potential to Vet the Development of a New Wastewater-based Epidemiology Product

Helping a publicly-traded manufacturer gain visibility into the market drivers and inhibitors and customers’ perceptions and needs before it validates the development of a new product.

The Challenge

A U.S.-based hardware manufacturer active in water and wastewater management was considering the development of a real-time wastewater-based epidemiology (WbE) product to support Covid-19 detection. The company was looking for support to refine its understanding of the market potential, and sought Bluefield Research to define the demand landscape and assess the adoption potential of this new solution.

Bluefield Engagement

Bluefield first mapped the wastewater surveillance landscape, focusing on epidemiological applications. It included a comparative review of U.S. case studies, with a focus on processes, sampling methods, and targeted populations. Then, we conducted over 15 interviews with various potential customers and influencers to explore the business case for the proposed WbE solution and to capture key inputs for market quantification and adoption. Finally, Bluefield sized and forecasted the 9-year total addressable market, focusing on utilities, institutions, industrial facilities, and buildings in the U.S., and including specific adoption curves.

Accelerating Outcomes

The project allowed the client to reevaluate the domestic market potential for its product and shed light on broader implications for product design–hardware and software–notably in relation to sampling method, viral charge analysis, result visualization, and engagement with end-users.
