Industrial water withdrawals for manufacturing, power and mining in non- OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) countries exceeded 306 billion gallons per day in 2018, of which 53% was made up by China, India, Brazil, Russia and South Africa, the so-called BRICS.
China represents 37% of non-OECD withdrawals, and exhibits some of the highest industrial water withdrawals of any country, second only to the United States, which reached 152 BGD in 2015.
