Water Reuse

Paralyzing drought and environmental impacts on water supplies across the U.S. sunbelt—from Florida to California—have thrust wastewater reuse into the spotlight as a critical solution to minimize long-term risks to state water supplies. Today, only 6.4% of wastewater flows in the U.S. are reused for industrial, irrigation, or municipal purposes, highlighting the expansion potential.

For years, Bluefield’s team has tracked more than 1,200 reuse projects, globally, to guide company strategies in developing alternative water supplies.

Water stressed regions turn to wastewater reuse

Gulf Council Countries (GCC)–Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar Saudi Arabia, UAE–face a unique combination of water-related challenges that include a need for greenfield wastewater collection and treatment infrastructure and a need to expand alternative water supplies, including water reuse. GCC countries agreed, through the GCC Unified Water Strategy, to increase reuse capacity to 90% of treated effluent by 2030. >>Learn More

Industrial reuse variability across OECD, industry characteristics

Industrial water withdrawals for manufacturing, power, and mining in Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries exceed 284 billion gallons per day. Spend on reuse is highest in countries with substantial heavy industry and mining activity that demand high volumes of water. The extent of reuse varies significantly across industry verticals with mining (24%) and downstream energy (29%) leading in share of water volume reused. >>Learn More

Municipal utilities embrace potable reuse

Project activity indicates a change in the market’s overall profile, including growth in potable reuse that is expected to close in on 19% of total installed capacity by 2025. The forecasted jump in potable reuse stems largely from heightened pressure on policymakers and utilities to stay ahead of scaling urban populations, anticipated future droughts, and limited water supply alternatives. >>Learn More
